How to Write Captions People Stop For, With Formulas and Examples

Captions Work Harder Than You Think

Most people write the caption last, as an afterthought, after a long day of filming and editing. In reality a caption is doing three jobs at once.

1. Stopping the scroll. The first line appears alongside your video. If it's interesting, people wait to see what the video is about.

2. Starting comments. Comments are a heavily weighted signal, and the caption is what triggers them.

3. Making you findable. Every platform reads caption text to categorize your video, and people genuinely use the search bar.

The third is the most overlooked and the longest-lasting, because a video matched to real search terms keeps pulling new viewers months after posting.

A Caption Structure That Works for Almost Anything

Good captions have four parts, in this order.

1. A scroll-stopping first line — short, sharp, and never wasted on a greeting.

2. One or two lines of expansion — what the viewer gets out of this.

3. One question or one ask — pick a single one.

4. Hashtags — at the very end, not mixed into the sentences.

6 Opening-Line Formulas

1: Lead with the result

"Cut my editing time from 3 hours to 40 minutes by changing one step."

2: Name the mistake

"If your hashtags still look like this, your video is reaching the wrong people."

3: Contradict the common belief

"Posting time doesn't matter as much as everyone tells you. Here's why."

4: Use a specific number

"Four things to check before you hit post."

5: Tell a short story

"Last year this video got 200 views. Today the same video got 40,000. I only changed the title and caption."

6: Just ask

"Does anyone else delete their underperforming videos?"

Example Captions by Goal

For comments

•"Which team are you — plan before filming, or film first and figure it out later?"
•"Which one have you gotten wrong before? Just the number is fine."

For saves

•"Long list. Don't take notes, just save it."
•"Keep this one — you'll never find it when you actually need it."

For selling

•"Three months in and I still haven't switched. Pros and cons, all of them."
•"This is the price, this is what you get. Decide for yourself in the video."

For followers

•"That's 1 of 5. The other four go up this week."
•"If you're starting a channel right now, follow along — more coming."

How Long Should a Caption Be?

•TikTok — one or two lines. UI covers the space and few people read further.
•Instagram — go long if it's worth reading. Long storytelling captions earn saves and shares.
•YouTube — go as long as you like. This is where SEO does the most work; use the keywords.
•Facebook — medium length, with line breaks for readability.

Adding Keywords Without Sounding Robotic

The mistake is stuffing keywords until it reads like a machine wrote it. The right approach: write for a human first, then check that the important terms are present.

Compare:

•❌ "captions caption ideas selling captions IG captions how to write captions"
•✅ "How to write selling captions without typing the word 'buy' once — works on both IG and TikTok."

The second contains the same terms, but a person can read it and wants to keep going.

5 Common Mistakes

•Opening with a greeting. "Hey everyone" burns your most valuable line.
•Describing what's already visible. They can see it. The caption should add what the footage doesn't say.
•Asking for everything at once. Like, share, save, follow, click — and people do none of it.
•Hashtags scattered mid-sentence. It breaks reading flow. Put them at the end.
•Recycling the same caption. The system sees repetition and your followers get bored.

When Nothing Comes to You

That's normal, especially once editing has drained you. The fastest fix is letting AI draft it, then rewriting it in your own voice.

MaxView AI does exactly this — paste a link or upload the file, and it analyzes the video content, then drafts a description, three title options, and hashtags in one pass. You pick and adjust.

One rule though: never ship AI output unedited. What makes people follow you is your voice. Let AI handle structure and keywords; keep the phrasing yours.
